The second variant of 5 Rufiyaa Banknote has been issued for circulation. The only design difference of this banknote is the Rufiyaa Symbol. It has currency symbok on both sides, signed by current Governor Ahmed Munawar and is dated 31 July 2025 (6 Safar 1447 ah) Assuming the shared image, the serial number seem to start from G. So Serials A000000-F999999(Governor Azeema Adam) Starting G000000 (Governor Ahmed Munawwar)
In their announcement, in summary it says;
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has printed and released a new batch of MVR 5 banknotes because the existing stock of these notes had become depleted due to high demand and frequent use in daily transactions.
Key points:
A new stock of MVR 5 notes has been printed to ensure sufficient cash circulation.
The notes are being distributed to the public through commercial banks.
Distribution began on 15 October 2026.
The new notes bear the signature of Governor Ahmed Munawwar and are dated 31 July 2025 (6 Safar 1447 AH).
The design includes the usual security features and some updated printing elements.
Both the newly issued MVR 5 notes and the existing MVR 5 notes already in circulation remain legal tender and can be used interchangeably.
In short: MMA has replenished the supply of MVR 5 banknotes to meet public demand, and the new notes are now entering circulation alongside the existing MVR 5 notes.
